And This is Why Cape Verde is the Perfect Place for a Tropical Getaway

Do you want to take a break from your daily routine and relax in a beautiful location? Then, Cape Verde is the perfect country to visit! It is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands located off the coast of West Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. I personally saw four of these islands!

The islands near the equator are well-known for their stunning beaches and warm climate ranging from 25-30C (77-86F) throughout the year. They are an excellent choice for anyone looking for a tropical getaway. When the Portuguese colonised the area, they divided the islands into two groups: Barlavento (windward) and Sotavento (leeward). The Barlavento Islands, which include Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal, and Boa Vista, are one group. In contrast, the Sotavento group comprises Maio, Santiago, Fogo, and Brava.

I thoroughly enjoyed my exploration of Santiago, the largest and most populous island of Cape Verde. It’s a hidden gem that showcases stunning beaches, historic landmarks, and lively culture. Tarrafal Beach is particularly noteworthy as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. With its crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand, visitors can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and boating. Along with various restaurants and bars situated right on the beach, serving refreshing beverages.

During my trip to Cape Verde, I explored its magnificent island country. I was captivated by its unique culture and history. Visiting the town of Tarrafal was an unforgettable experience for me, thanks to its rich history. One of the standout places I saw was the Municipal Church, which had captivating architecture and a stunning interior. Learning about its role in the country’s religious history amazed and overwhelmed me. However, Tarrafal’s history could be more positive. I was also deeply touched by my trip to the nearby Tarrafal Concentration Camp, which reminded me of Cape Verde’s troubled past. As I walked through the camp, I was struck by the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.

The region of Santiago is rich in history and culture, providing a glimpse into the past. During my trip to Assomada, I visited the Church of Santa Catarina (Igreja Baxu), which is 270 years old and a significant representation of Catholicism in Cape Verde, where the majority are followers of this religion. The church’s architecture uniquely blends African and European designs, reflecting the country’s diverse heritage. Another highlight of my visit was exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cidade Velha, which was the former capital of Cape Verde. The Se Cathedral, constructed in the 15th century, is a must-see destination for architecture and history enthusiasts.

On my trip, I visited Santo Antão, the second island on my itinerary. The island is known as the “Island of Mountains” on Cape Verde, and I couldn’t resist going there. The mountain ranges on Santo Antão are stunning and will leave you speechless. Additionally, the locals celebrate a unique culture through colourful festivals and live music heard throughout the island. To kick off my adventure, I headed to the charming village of Santa Tereza. The vibrant colours and flavours of the handmade crafts, spices, and sweets sold by friendly locals delighted my senses. And, of course, I couldn’t leave without tasting the freshly made grogue at the nearby sugar cane distillery, a must-try for anyone visiting Santo Antão.

I went to Paul Valley, a beautiful green valley on the island’s north coast. The area has stunning landscapes, cocoa plantations, and coffee farms. During my visit, I took a nature walk and a bicycle tour to explore the surroundings and visited the historic town of Trinidad. Additionally, you can buy locally made items like chocolate, crafts, and coffee in the valley. For a peaceful island experience, I suggest staying at Bom Bom Island Resort.

The Cova Crater, located about 3 kilometres south of Ribeira Grande on Santo Antão, is a well-known attraction created by a volcanic eruption. The Cova Crater provides gorgeous scenery of the valley and is a favoured place to start hiking and climbing to Pico da Principe, the island’s tallest peak. To get to the crater, hire a taxi from Ribeira Grande or take a guided tour for a history lesson. You can walk or ride a horse to reach the hole more daringly. The area surrounding the Cova Crater is abundant in traditional farming, including coffee farms that produce exceptional blends. So make sure to bring some home to savour the unique flavours of Santo Antão.

As my third island destination, I travelled to Boa Vista. Although the island may seem barren, it boasts gorgeous white sand beaches and the chance to witness captivating sea turtles in their natural element. While on this stunning island, I explored many incredible spots, beginning at the White Sands Hotel & Spa. The hotel displays a magnificent, lavish exterior, intricate designs, and pristine and cosy accommodations.

While on my trip, I visited Praia de Chaves, a beautiful sandy beach beside Praia de Santa Monica, famous among surfers and sunbathers. Stay at Alisios Beach Resort, which offers well-designed accommodations and all necessary amenities. You can admire the beautiful sand dunes and turquoise waves hitting the shore at this place. This hotel boasts top-quality amenities and stylish decor that relaxes and refreshes you. Fuel up with fresh fruit and delicious local cheese at their breakfast buffet. And make sure to take advantage of the unforgettable Boa Vista sunset dinner, where tiki lamps provide the only light as you dine on the beach.

Have you considered exploring the vibrant nightlife scene in Cape Verde? São Vicente, my fourth visited island, is the perfect destination for music lovers and foodies alike, with something to offer for everyone.

If you want to find beautiful beaches, you should visit Sao Pedro Beach. It’s famous for its golden sand, peaceful water, and stunning views of Monte Verde and Baía das Gatas. This beach is a great place to unwind and enjoy activities like surfing, kitesurfing, or reading a book away from the bustling city of Mindelo. In Mindelo, the party scene comes alive as night falls. Praça Nova is one of my favourite picks, where you can enjoy live music, mouth-watering local food and drinks, and dance.

Mindelo has various great food options, making it a perfect place for food lovers. You can discover different types of cuisines here. Mindelo’s culinary scene includes traditional dishes like cachupa and seafood, the local favourite, and international food infused with Cape Verdean flavours. There are many food options, ranging from luxurious restaurants to street vendors. Try authentic dishes, such as seafood stew and grilled lobster. Also, remember to taste djagacida, a unique and flavourful African herb, in some words, for those who like to try something new.

Cape Verde is undeniably beautiful with its stunning islands and unique features. I have yet to go to all the islands, but I want to share my itinerary for my next trip to this paradise. But, of course, you can visit before I do!

Maio Island might not be well-known among foreigners, but it’s a popular getaway spot for locals. The island boasts untouched white sandy beaches and clear blue waters, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing trip. Remember to visit the salt pans where farmers gather the island’s famous salt – a must-see attraction. Praia Real is an excellent spot for swimming and exploring due to its calm and shallow sea. Additionally, it’s a secluded beach, making it even more perfect for a peaceful day out.

Sal will be a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a place with reliably warm weather. This island is renowned for its stunning beaches, where you can bask in Caribbean-like conditions and marvel at the crystal-clear waters. Sal Island boasts stunning beaches ideal for leisurely walks, dipping your feet in the clean water, or unwinding on warm sand under the sun. The island offers luxurious hotels with first-class amenities, delightful cocktails, and delectable cuisine, making it a perfect place to unwind after an exciting day. In addition, visitors can indulge in lavish spa services and exclusive beach clubs during their stay.

On my next visit to Cape Verde, I am excited to explore Fogo Island, known for its dramatic landscape. The island boasts an active volcano, towering mountains, and a unique colonial town shrouded in mist, making it an excellent destination for adventure seekers. Pico do Fogo, the highest peak in Cape Verde at over 2,800 meters, last erupted in 2014. The colourful colonial architecture and vibrant culture of São Filipe are also a must-see. I am eager to experience Fogo’s natural beauty and cultural richness firsthand.

I’m also looking forward to visiting Brava, known as the “island of flowers,” during my next trip to Cape Verde. It’s a picturesque island perfect for nature enthusiasts because of its vibrant plant life and lovely flowers. Moreover, I’m intrigued by the origins of Crioulo music on this island and enthusiastic about learning more about it. Brava is an excellent choice for those who appreciate serene beaches and picturesque scenery. You shouldn’t overlook Fajã d’Água beach, known for its beautiful white sand and clear water, perfect for sunbathing and unwinding. Brava has much to offer, from awe-inspiring landscapes to peaceful beaches and cultural activities.

Suppose you’re seeking a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. In that case, I recommend considering São Nicolau in Cape Verde. This island is truly a rejuvenating and picturesque destination I plan to visit soon. Hikers and nature enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise, with abundant trails, hills, and mountains to explore. The island also boasts hidden beaches with breathtaking views that will surely surprise you. Also, São Nicolau is home to some of the finest seafood restaurants in the archipelago, serving freshly caught fish and traditional Cape Verdean cuisine. With its towering mountains, rugged coastlines, and arid valleys, São Nicolau is a natural haven for those seeking respite from the daily grind. This hidden gem is worth discovering.

If you’re looking for an adventure in Cape Verde, consider visiting Santa Luzia, the final island. Tourists often overlook it because permission is required from local authorities to see it, but this adds to the excitement of exploring this hidden paradise. Santa Luzia is perfect for enjoying natural wonders like hot springs and lava tubes. You can relax in the hot springs or explore the fascinating lava tubes. However, remember that there are no restaurants or bars on the island, so be sure to bring your own food and enjoy a picnic on one of its unspoiled beaches.

If you are looking for a refreshing getaway, Cape Verde is the perfect destination. Despite being a bit remote and requiring some effort to reach, it is worth the trip! The stunning beaches, warm and welcoming locals, and vibrant culture make for an unforgettable vacation. I assure you that you will want to stay once you visit! Each island, from the rocky hills of Fogo to the fishing villages of Sal Island, offers its own distinct experience. Whether you want to unwind or adventure, these peaceful islands have something for everyone. So what are you waiting for? Get planning and escape from reality into the heavenly paradise of Cape Verde!
